Air Permitting and Compliance
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulates the amount of air pollution UNC Charlotte’s operations can emit to the environment. The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) enforces the air quality regulations to protect outdoor air quality. The Environmental and Contractor Safety team collaborates with Facilities Management partners to manage air pollution generated from construction projects, renovation projects and air pollution emitting equipment. The main goal is to ensure compliance with air permits and protect air quality.
What you need to know
- Contact the EHS office if you plan to install, modify, remove and/or operate air pollution emitting equipment such as a kiln, automotive paint spray booth, boilers, incinerators, or large gas- powered vehicles.
- Refrigerant gases used in air-conditioners, refrigerators, freezers, and other cooling equipment on campus are categorized as ozone-depleting substances. Contact EHS if cooling equipment is removed from service or modified to ensure the refrigerant is not released into the environment.
- Review the UNC Charlotte Facilities Management Planning, Design and Construction Manual to ensure regulated building materials are sampled and remediated prior to the start of a renovation project. Consult with EHS to determine appropriate compliance methods and recordkeeping requirements. o Contact the Facilities Management Engineering Department to determine if renovation or construction project activities will affect the Air Quality permit.
