The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulates the Clean Water Act and Safe Drinking Water Act to ensure access to clean and safe water. The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) enforces the water regulations to protect water quality. The Environmental and Contractor Safety team collaborates with Facilities Management partners to manage water quality on UNC Charlotte’s campus. The main goal is to ensure compliance with water regulations and to protect water quality.
EHS focuses on the following water quality categories:
- Drinking Water Quality
- Pool and Spa Water Quality
- Stormwater
- Wastewater
what you need to know
- The drinking water meets the regulatory standards set by the EPA, DEQ and the City of Charlotte.
- The pool and spa water quality are monitored. The Sanitation Department conducts periodic inspections.
- Stormwater is water from storm events that flows over the ground and enters the nearest storm drain. Storm drains on campus directly drain into the Toby Creek and we attempt to reduce pollutants to protect water quality. Do not pour chemicals, paints, oils, grease, or other harmful substances into the storm drains.
- All wastewater discharged to the sanitary sewer system must comply with permit limits. Do not pour chemicals, paints, oils, grease or other harmful substances into the sanitary sewer (sinks, toilets, drains, etc.) system.
