Heat Stress
Millions of workers are exposed to heat in their workplaces. Every year, thousands of workers become sick from heat exposure. Supervisors and employees can do their part to help reduce risks of heat related exposure by considering the following:
Prevention of Heat Stress: Supervisors

Adjust the work schedule, if possible. Assign heavier work on cooler days or during the cooler part of the day.

Establish a schedule for work and rest periods during hot days.

Train workers to recognize signs and symptoms of heat stress and what to do. Visit our Heat Stress Fact Sheet for more information.

Prevention of Heat Stress: Employees

Learn to recognize the symptoms of heat stress. Pace the work, taking adequate rest periods. Visit our Heat Stress Fact Sheet for more information.

Use adequate fans for ventilation and cooling, especially when wearing personal protective equipment (PPE).

Keep shaded from direct heat where possible.

Drink plenty of water: in hot environments the body requires more water.
